About Us

Tambuli Mahasammelan

Tambuli Mahasammelan was formed in the year 1902 by some enthusiastic and energetic persons of Tambuli Community with the objective of all out development and wellbeing primarily for the Tambuli community and largely for the society as a whole. Subsequently it became a Registered Society in the year 1940 under Registration No. 10340 dt. 06.12.1940 under Socities Registration Act.

Initially the aims and objectives were to protect, promote and develop the religious, moral, physical, educational, social and economic interest of the Tambuli Community and also others.

This caste is not numerous in Bengal, but, wherever found, is regarded as one of the clean Sudra castes, still wearing the Brahmanical cord in some parts of Hindustan, although it has been disused for ages in others.

In Bengal the term Tamboli is applied to any person engaged in retailing Pan,1 and is not confined, as it ought to be, to the members of a particular caste.

The census rolls, by enumerating 59,726 persons as belonging to the caste, have endorsed this popular use of the word, while in Dacca, where there are not fifty individuals pertaining to it, the number entered is 200. The few resident in the city state that their ancestors came from the Burdwan district, where they still send for their wives, as the Hindustani Tamboli refuses to give his daughters in marriage to the Bengali.

Present Executive Committee has decided to ensure fulfilling the basis objectives set at the time of formation of Tambuli Mahasammelan and for that necessary modification and modernization of activities has been decided to be made. It has been decided to take the following steps: 1. Publication of one “Members’ Directory 2. Smooth functioning of Web-site 3. Opening of E-mail account 4. Opening of whatsapp group covering as many members as possible to be used only for the activities of Mahasammelan All the four poins are for better communication 5. Formation of one Co-operatve Credit Society for economic help to appropriate members. 6. Setting up of “Briddhsram” and “Sadhunibas” both Asrams for the social interest. 7. Setting up of “Chatrabas” to promote education 8. Setting up of “Homestay” for economic support and development 9. Regular visit of Executive Committee Memmbers in different groups to ensure exchange of views. 10. To examine the possibility of setting up of one ATM counter and one “Mobile Tower” at Tambuli Bhaban for financial stability of the Mahasammelan.
